Fred M. Benton, Jr.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our own, NCCC Board Member Fred M. Benton, Jr.

Joining the Board of Directors in 2002, Fred was more than a body to fill a cold, empty seat. His warm laughter, jovial personality and unique way of saying "howdy" set every meeting ablaze. His passion for the rights and feelings of others was second only to the love he expressed to his closests friends and family.

He will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives he touched.

Fred M. Benton, Jr.

Fred Benton died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday. After attending George Washington University majoring in Journalism, Fred became a leader as an erudite epicurean, sharing his love of food with many listeners and readers following his career. Fred worked for the Raleigh Times, Spectator Magazine, and was the current food editor for the Raleigh Downtowner. Fred also co-hosted a radio show which ran over a decade entitled Better Living. He was so proud of interviewing such chefs as Craig Claiborne, Julia Child and many other celebrities.

Fred’s philanthropic spirit was far outreached as he co-hosted “Taste of the Nation” for a number of years to raise funds for the homeless and hungry. He also enjoyed his love of food by working in his own catering business for many years. Fred will be missed for his wonderful way with words and his incredible sense of humor.
