The Beginning of Daylight Saving Time Is the Perfect Time to Check Your Vehicle for Open Recalls

If your vehicle does have a recall, call your local dealer ASAP to schedule the free repair

March 9, 2025

As Daylight Saving Time begins this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reminding all drivers to make a quick safety check of their vehicles by looking up any open recalls. It’s part of the Safe Cars Save Lives “Check for Recalls” campaign, timed to coincide with the clock change.

Recall Repairs Are Always Free

If your vehicle is under recall for any safety issue, the repair will be performed at no cost to you.

"Keeping yourself and your family safe is as easy as checking for open recalls today," said Heidi King, NHTSA Deputy Administrator. "You don’t pay a dime for recall repairs. Visit NHTSA.gov/recalls to see if your car or truck is affected, then call your dealer to schedule your free repair."

Search, Sign Up, and Spread the Word

All U.S. vehicle owners are urged to:

  • Visit NHTSA.gov/Recalls and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if your vehicle has any outstanding safety recalls.
  • If your vehicle does have an open recall, call your local dealer immediately to schedule the free repair.
  • Sign up at NHTSA.gov/Alerts to receive email notifications about future recalls for your make and model.
  • Encourage friends and family to check their vehicles for recalls as well.

Check at Least Twice Per Year

In recent years, hundreds of new safety recalls have affected tens of millions of vehicles in the U.S. The Safe Cars Save Lives campaign recommends checking for open recalls at least twice annually, every March and November—to align with the start and end of Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving Time begins today, March 9, 2025, at 2:00 am. Before you move your clocks ahead one hour tonight, take a moment to check your vehicle for any open recalls!
