Mitsubishi Motors North America has announced the recall of approximately 83,555 model year 2014-2018 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles.

What's the problem?

The internal acceleration sensor in the Safety Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) on the affected vehicles can misinterpret vibrations—such as those from poor road conditions or a flat tire—to be a sensor error, thereby disabling the vehicle's air bags from deploying in a crash.

Air bags that do not deploy as designed during a crash increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

What happens next?

Mitsubishi will notify owners of the recalled Mirage vehicles. Mitsubishi dealers will then reprogram the SRS-ECU software, free of charge.

Owners with additional questions about this recall can contact Mitsubishi customer service at (888) 648-7820—reference recall number SR-17-006.
