U.S. consumers spent a lot of time in car showrooms in August of 2012, giving automakers their best sales month since August of 2007.

Chrysler Group led the way among domestic auto companies. Its sales were up a total of 14 percent over August of 2011 with Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck, and FIAT brands each recording year-over-year sales gains in August compared with the same month a year ago. Chrysler has now seen 29 consecutive months of sales gains.

Ford also saw a significant rise in sales from August of last year at 13 percent. General Motors saw a sales increase of 10 percent.

Among foreign car companies, Toyota and Volkswagen both saw staggering sales increases of 46 percent over August of 2011. Audi's sales rose 13 percent.

These consistently strong auto sales numbers are likely a positive sign for the U.S. economy, which is continuing to show signs of improvement.
