BMW of North America is recalling certain model year 2016 X5 xDrive40e vehicles.

The affected vehicles have a Digital Motor Electronic (DME) control unit that may have a loose electrical ground cable, possibly causing an under-voltage condition that would result in the transmission shifting to neutral.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

The X5 xDrive40e vehicles impacted by this recall were all manufactured between the dates of July 29, 2015 and September 9, 2015.

BMW will notify vehicle owners beginning on February 6, 2017, and local dealers will tighten the ground cable on the affected vehicles, free of charge.
