Spartan Motors USA announced this week that it would be recalling certain model year 2012 Utilimaster Walk-In Vans. The affected vehicles have an undercarriage ramp that may rub against a hydraulic brake line.

Contact between the ramp and the brake line may cause a hole in the brake line resulting in a loss of brake fluid and lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Spartan Motors is including about 210 vehicles in connection with this defect.

Utilimaster will notify owners, and dealers will install a new hydraulic brake line that will not contact the undercarriage ramp, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in October 2015.

Additionally, Spartan Motors is recalling about 400 model year 2014-2015 Utilimaster Vans. The affected vehicles may be equipped with a tire placard that indicates the wrong cargo capacity information. An incorrect label may result in the vehicle being overloaded which can cause tire failure and increase the risk of a crash.

These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Utilimaster will notify owners and will send a label with the cargo capacity information corrected, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on November 13, 2015.

Owners with questions about either recall can contact Utilimaster customer service at (800) 582-3453 and Spartan customer service at (800) 543-4277.
