Braking, Suspension Concerns Lead to Recall from Vanguard

January 7, 2016

Vanguard is issuing a pair of recalls for products due to issues stemming from faulty axles.

The first recall is from Vanguard National Parts. This division is recalling about 770 SAF-Holland tapered axles, part numbers 24790745090, 24790175090, and 24790165090. In the affected axles, the wheel end may separate due to an out of specification material thickness on the spindle.

A wheel end that separates from the trailer axle increases the risk of a crash.

The second recall was announced by Vanguard National Trailer Corporation. The company is recalling about 85 model year 2015-2016 CIMC Dry Freight and Refrigerated trailers equipped with certain Meritor EX225L2 or EX225L+ axles. The affected axle assemblies have caliper bolts that may not have been properly tightened, allowing the caliper mounting bolts to back out and the caliper to detach from the axle flange.

If the caliper detaches from the axle flange, braking performance would be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

Vanguard will notify owners, and dealers will make the requisite changes, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2016.

Owners with questions about the recalls can contact Vanguard at (219) 253-2000, SAF-Holland at (888) 396-6501, and Meritor at (866) 668-7221.
