A heavy equipment manufacturer is issuing a recall due to exterior lighting defects.

Vermeer Manufacturing Company is voluntarily recalling certain model Brush Chippers and Stump Cutters. This equipment is designed for use in tree disposal. The affected models have LED side markers lights that do not have reflectors built into the lenses, reducing the visibility of the vehicle. The absence of reflectors could reduce the ability for others to see the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

This defect results in these vehicles failing to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Over 21,000 vehicles are included in the recall. The models affected are: certain model year 2008-2016 Vermeer BC1000XL, 2013-2016 BC700XL, 2012-2016 BC900XL, 2009-2016 BC1200XL, 2003-2016 BC1800XL, 2005-2014 BC600XL, 2005-2016 SC802 and 2005-2013 SC602.

Vermeer will notify owners, and will supply reflective decals to be installed on the trailer sides, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners with questions should contact Vermeer customer service at (800) 829-0051.
