Ford has issued a safety recall for certain model year 2017-2018 Ford Taurus vehicles that are equipped with mechanical key ignition systems.

What's the problem?

The keys for the affected vehicles can be removed from the ignition when the transmission is not in the PARK position. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection."

If the key is removed from the ignition while the vehicle is not in the PARK position and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford says that approximately 2,100 Taurus vehicles are included in this recall.

What happens next?

Owners of the recalled Taurus vehicles will be notified by Ford beginning in mid-March 2018. Dealers will then replace the shifter assembly, free of charge.
