General Motors (GM) is recalling certain software intended for model year 2015 vehicles that was mistakenly installed by service centers into 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles equipped with Allison A1000 transmissions.

The incorrect software may cause the transmission indicator not to display that gear position "1" (first gear) has been selected. As such, these vehicles do not conform with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect."

If the driver pulls into traffic unknowingly in first gear, the vehicle's speed would be limited, resulting in an increased risk of a crash.

General Motors will notify the owners of all affected Silverado and Sierra vehicles, and dealers will upload the correct transmission software free of charge.
