Spartan Motors USA is issuing a recall for emergency vehicles due to powertrain issues.

The auto manufacturer is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 MetroStar Chassis cabs built for Emergency Response use and ILAV Chassis cabs for Department of Defense use. The affected vehicles are equipped with certain drive axles manufactured by Marmon-Herrington. The affected axles have hex nuts on the flange yoke that may not have been properly tightened.

If the hex nuts are not tightened to specification, the driveshaft may disconnect from the drive axle, resulting in a loss of propulsion and increasing the risk of a crash.

Spartan Motors is recalling 23 vehicles in connection with this defect.

Spartan will notify owners and dealers will inspect the hex nuts, tightening them as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in December 2015.

Owners with questions about the recall can contact Marmon Herrington customer service at (517) 543-6400 and Spartan customer service at (800) 543-4277.
