An organic produce distributor is issuing a recall for a limited quantity of baby spinach.

OrganicGirl announced the decision this week after tests indicated that trace levels of cadmium are potentially present in the product, according to PRNewswire. The recall includes 1,290 cases distributed primarily to Western and Midwestern states. No other OrganicGirl Baby Spinach products or other OrganicGirl salads are included in the recall.

The affected product is a five ounce package of OrganicGirl Baby Spinach with a Use-by Date of September 13 and Product Code of B030298-001B08S. If a consumer has this product, it should be discarded and the company will replace it.

The recalled product was distributed to 13 states including Arizona, California, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Utah.

There is currently no maximum cadmium threshold allowable in the U.S. , and it is doubtful that consumption of the element would result in serious health problems. The action by OrganicGirl in cooperation with the California Department of Public Health is precautionary. No illnesses have been reported in association with this product.
