Gel Spice, Inc. has announced a recall for a product that contains high levels of a dangerous substance.

The company is recalling one lot of Fresh Finds Ground Turmeric Powder after the discovery that the product contains elevated lead levels. Lead can accumulate in the body over time. Too much can cause health problems, including delayed mental and physical development and learning deficiencies. Pregnant women, infants and young children especially should avoid exposure to lead.

The recalled product is packaged in a 3.75-ounce jar. It has a code of 03/08/19 and 05/18/19 on the neck of the container. The package also bears UPC code 81026-01230.

Gel Spice, Inc. distributed these items to Big Lots stores throughout the United States.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

Consumers who have purchased the affected item should immediately discard the product.

Customers with questions about this recall can contact Gel Spice, Inc. at (201) 564-0435.

Update: Gel Spice has expanded its recall to include additional brands. For affected brand names, weights, UPCs, and lot numbers, see the FDA release.

Elevated lead levels have also prompted a turmeric recall from JM Exotic Foods.
