Kia Motors America, the North American branch of the South Korean automaker, is issuing a recall for their popular Sportage SUV.

An electrical issue in the 2011 Sportage has been discovered, which can cause multiple issues for the vehicle.

There have been reports of intermittent cruise control, erratic illumination of the ESC indicator lamp, and, most importantly, interference with the functionality of the brake lights.

Brake light malfunction greatly increases the risk of rear-end collisions.

Kia will contact affected owners when replacement features are ready to be implemented. Dealers will perform the installation free of charge.

If you have questions, contact Kia at (800) 333-4542 and ask about recall #SC121.

Earlier editions of the Sportage have been recalled for a similar issue, along with other Kia vehicles, like the Rondo, Sorento, Sedona, Soul, and Optima.
