UPDATED: Faulty Takata Inflators Prompt Recall Expansion for Toyota, Lexus Vehicles
As a precautionary measure, Toyota has announced a recall expansion to cover more vehicles equipped with faulty Takata equipment.
The manufacturer is recalling certain model year 2008 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix, model year 2008-2010 Lexus SC 430, and model year 2008 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. This recall is in addition to previously recalled vehicles and will cover all remaining dual-stage front passenger inflators of a particular type.
The affected inflators are susceptible to a rupture in the event of a crash.
Toyota is including about 198,000 vehicles in this announcement.
All known owners of the affected Toyota and Lexus vehicles will be notified by first class mail by March 15, 2016. A notification date has not yet been determined for Pontiac owners. Dealers will replace the airbag inflator or the airbag assembly with a newly manufactured one at no cost.
Owners with questions about these recalls can contact Toyota at (800) 331-4331, Lexus at (800) 255-3987, or Pontiac at (800) 762-2737.
