Faulty Transmission Software Prompts Recall of Dodge Dart

September 15, 2015

Fiat Chrysler U.S. is recalling about 24,000 vehicles due to a potentially malfunctioning transmission.

This week, the automaker announced the decision to recall certain model year 2013-2015 Dodge Dart vehicles. The affected cars may experience failure of the transmission control module (TCM), causing the transmission to unexpectedly shift into neutral.

If the transmission shifts into neutral, it can cause loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

In March of 2014, Fiat Chrysler became aware of 12 warranty claims in relation to the transmission defect. In July 2014, engineering analysis was able to identify a common failure mode, enabling the company to design a new bracket design to correct the issue.

As of Aug. 17, 2015, the company is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Fiat Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the TCM and bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule for this recall.

Owners may contact Fiat Chrysler customer service at (800) 853-1403 for additional information.
