The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is mailing out 285,361 checks worth, in total, more than $3.7 million to people who lost money to a pyramid scheme known as Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing.

The operators of the scheme have been prohibited from multi-level marketing under the terms of a settlement with the FTC and the states of Illinois, Kentucky, and North Carolina.

Those who receive a check should either deposit or cash the check within 60 days. The FTC may have more funds to distribute at some future time after lawsuits filed against Fortune's highest-earning sales representatives have been resolved.

The agency never makes people pay money or give account-related information to cash a refund check.

Consumers with questions should contact the FTC's refund administrator, Epiq Systems, at (800) 964-0978.
