Jimmy John's is the latest retailer to find itself in the middle of a data breach investigation.

More than 215 locations are affected by the breach; five are located in North Carolina.

According to a release from the company, a hacker stole the log-in credentials from Jimmy John's point-of-sale vendor and accessed the systems remotely between June 16 and Sept. 5. The breach seems to only affect debit and credit cards that were swiped at these locations and do not include cards that were entered manually or used online. Stolen information could include the card number, cardholder name, verification code and expiration date.

Information that was entered online, like email addresses, was not impacted.

Jimmy John's learned of a possible breach on July 30 and hired third party forensic experts to assist with the investigation. The company says that the threat has been contained and customers can use their cards at all locations.

The company is installing encrypted swipe machines, implementing system enhancements and reviewing its policies and procedures for its third party vendors. For customers who may have been part of the breach, Jimmy John's is providing free credit monitoring and identity protection services.
