KTM North America is issuing a recall for all model year 2014 1290 Super Duke R motorcycles.

The recall stems from the discovery that the affected bikes may leak fuel from the threaded inserts at the rear of the gas tank. In the presence of an ignition source, this can increase the risk of a fire. The cause of the defect is an improper coating applied to the fuel tank overflow pipe during the production process.

The first incidents hinting at this issue in the United States were recorded in October 2014, prompting an investigation at the manufacturer level in November 2014.

KTM is expected to begin notifying owners of the recall in August 2015. Dealers will seal the threaded inserts to prevent future fuel leaks, free of charge. Owners with questions can contact KTM at (800) 327-4236.
