General Motors is issuing a recall for certain Chevrolet Impalas due to a defective center storage console.

The company is recalling about 14,940 model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured between May 7 and July 28 because in the event of an accident, the center storage console may not stay latched. This could increase the risk of injury.

Subsequently, the cars fail to comply with federal guidelines.

Since parts to remedy this condition are not yet available, GM will send owners an interim notification in early October, and will send a second letter when parts are available.

At that time dealers will replace the console storage compartment door inertia latch, free of charge. Owners can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14476.
