General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 Buick Encore and Cadillac ATS vehicles due a seatbelt defect.

The driver and passenger lap belts may not lock in a retracted position, allowing them to be extended when pulled upon. If this happens, the driver or passenger may not be secure during a crash.

More than 48,000 cars are affected by the recall.

Since replacement parts are not yet available, GM will send an interim notification to owners beginning in October. GM will send a second when the parts are available. At that time dealers will replace both the front driver's and passenger's lap belt pretensioners free of charge.

Owners can contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 for more information, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14171.
