Chrysler has announced that it is recalling vehicles with fragile powertrain equipment.

The recall applies to certain Jeep SUVs and Ram trucks. In the affected models, the halfshafts may have been incorrectly manufactured, causing them to fracture without warning. A fractured halfshaft may damage underbody components and create road debris, increasing the risk of a crash.

The manufacturer believes that about 1,000 model year 2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles are equipped with faulty right halfshafts, while about 50 have defective left halfshafts. Approximately 100 Ram 1500 trucks feature faulty front halfshafts.

Chrysler will notify owners of the affected vehicles, and dealers will replace the defective parts, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule for this recall.

Owners with questions about this recall can contact Chrysler toll-free at (800) 853-1403.
