Ignition Malfunction in Chevrolet, GMC Trucks Prompts GM Recall

October 19, 2015

General Motors has issued a recall that sounds very similar to one that recently resulted in a substantial fine for the automaker.

GM announced last week that it would be recalling about 3,000 model year 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD, and model year 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD, Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Sierra HD vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, the ignition key can get stuck in the "start" position and can unexpectedly move out of "start" while the vehicle is in use. This latter effect can lead to the loss of power steering and braking capability, increasing the risk of a crash.

According to a statement from the manufacturer, the defect comes from an ignition lock actuator gear with an outer diameter that exceeds specifications, which makes turning the ignition key difficult.

GM is aware of five shutoffs but no crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this condition.

The company will notify owners and dealers will replace the ignition lock housing.

Customers with questions about the recall can contact GM customer service at (877) 416-3954.
