The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an initial investigation into an estimated 123,000 model year 2011-2012 Dodge Charger vehicles.

To date, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has identified 14 owner complaints involving the Dodge Charger vehicles in question alleging incidents of alternator failure resulting in engine stall while driving with no restart.

Half of the complaints involved incidents that occurred while driving at or above 40 miles per hour. One incident alleges stopping the vehicle in a traffic lane with smoke issuing from the alternator.

A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

Subsequent investigation of this issue could eventually lead to a safety recall of all affected 2011-2012 Dodge Charger vehicles.
