Daimler has issued a recall for 17,501 model year 2003-2006 Dodge and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans due to a lamp problem.

On these vehicles, the instrument cluster does not light up the BRAKE warning lamp in the cluster during the vehicle's start-up bulb-function check. For this reason, these vehicles do not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems."

If the lamp does not light up during the start-up check, the driver has no confirmation that it is functioning and therefore might not know whether or not it will come on if the level of brake fluid is low. If the driver does not realize that the vehicle is low on brake fluid, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Daimler will inform owners and, in collaboration with Dodge dealers, will correct the cluster software as necessary for no charge. Daimler has not yet provided a notification schedule.
