Kia Motors America is recalling certain model year 2017 Kia Niro vehicles. The affected vehicles may be equipped with a damaged Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) connector, which could lead to a loss of electric power steering assistance.

Loss of power steering assist would require higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of a crash.

Kia will notify owners of the recalled vehicles, and local Kia dealers will replace the MDPS motor free of charge.

This recall is expected to begin on April 7, 2017. Vehicle owners with additional questions can contact Kia customer service at (800) 333-4542.

Kia's reference number for this recall is SC145.
