Krishna Food Corp is recalling 16 cartons of Bikaju Chowpati Bhelpuri, because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

Recent tests conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) show this product to be contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

No illnesses have been reported, to date.

The affected product was distributed in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, through retail stores, with batch number 2016 F97, and best-before date of June 2017.

Customers who have purchased the product are urged to destroy it.
