A recall has been issued for weight loss supplements that contain unapproved medications.

Lab tests by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that Forever Beautiful Bee Pollen and Forever Beautiful Infinity diet supplements contain undeclared sibutramine or a combination of sibutramine and phenolphthalein.

Sibutramine is an appetite suppressant that was withdrawn from the U.S. market in October 2010 due to increased risk of seizures, heart attacks, arrhythmia and strokes. The drug can increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate and presents a risk for those with certain health conditions.

Phenolphthalein is an ingredient previously used in over-the-counter laxatives, but because of concerns of carcinogenicity, it is not currently approved for marketing in the US. Health risks associated with phenolphthalein could include potentially serious gastrointestinal disturbances, irregular heartbeat, and cancer with long-term use.

Both supplements are packaged in bottles of 60 capsules and were distributed nationwide via the internet from July 7 to Nov. 3.

REFA Enterprises is notifying its customers by email and is arranging for return of all recalled products. Consumers should stop using and return products to the company.
