BMW of North America is recalling some model year 2013-2014 BMW 528i, 528i xDrive, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i, 550i xDrive, and M5 vehicles, model year 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 vehicles, and model year 2014 BMW 525d xDrive vehicles.

Approximately 13,980 BMW vehicles are included in this recall.

What's the problem?

The rear reflex reflectors on the affected vehicles may not reflect a sufficient amount of light. As such, the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

If the reflectors do not reflect enough light, the vehicle may be less visible to other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.

What Happens Next?

BMW will notify owners of the recalled vehicles beginning in late July 2017. Local BMW dealers will then replace the rear reflex reflectors at no cost to vehicle owners.
