Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain model year 2017 E300, E300 4Matic, and E43 AMG vehicles due to an improperly installed passenger detection system. As a result, the front air bag may not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of an injury.

The recall was initiated because the front passenger occupant detection control unit may have been incorrectly installed in approximately 12,456 affected vehicles. Consequently, the front passenger seat occupant may be misclassified. For example, an adult may be misclassified as a child-seat, causing the front passenger air bag to be deactivated in the event of a crash.

Mercedes-Benz will notify owners of the recalled vehicles, and local dealers will inspect the routing of the pressure hose of the occupant detection unit and replace the pressure hose and seat occupancy detection mat if necessary, free of charge.

This recall is expected to begin in early March 2017.

For additional recall information, vehicle owners can contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at (800) 367-6372.
