A malfunctioning electrical system is prompting a recall from a luxury automaker.

This week, Mercedes-Benz USA announced that it would be recalling certain model year 2014-2015 B-Class Electric Drive vehicles. Due to a communication error within the electric drive system, the electric powertrain unit may shut down, temporarily immobilizing the vehicle and resulting in a loss of propulsion power. A vehicle stall increases the risk of crash and injury.

The manufacturer is recalling about 2,600 vehicles in connection with this defect.

Mercedes-Benz launched its initial investigation in April 2015 based on individual reports from owners. No third party damages or personal injuries were reported.

The company will notify owners, and dealers will update the electric drive system software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in December 2015.

Owners with questions about the recall can contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at (800) 367-6372.
