Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling more than 50,000 Outlander Sport vehicles from the 2011, 2012, and 2016 model years.

The lift gate support outer tube on the affected Outlander vehicles may have insufficient anti-corrosion treatment that can allow the outer tube to corrode due to salt and water penetration.

If the outer tube corrodes, there may be a rapid loss of the gas used to provide lift assistance, causing the lift gate to fall suddenly, increasing the risk of injury.

Mitsubishi will notify owners, and Mitsubishi dealers will replace the lift gate supports on the affected vehicles, free of charge.

Mitsubishi has not yet provided a specific owner notification schedule for this recall. Owners with additional questions can contact Mitsubishi Motors North America customer service at (888) 648-7820.

Mitsubishi's reference number for this recall is SR-16-011.
