Cold temperatures may cause a loss of brake function in certain Nissan electric vehicles.

The automaker has announced a recall for certain model year 2013-2015 LEAF vehicles. During very cold temperatures, the relay inside the electronic brake booster may freeze, requiring the driver to exert more effort to slow the vehicle down.

If the brake relay fails, longer distances or additional brake effort would be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

About 47,000 LEAF vehicles are included in Nissan's recall.

The company will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Intelligent Brake Control Unit software, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this recall.

Vehicle owners with questions about the recall can contact Nissan customer service at (800) 647-7261.
