Pier 1 Imports Issues Recall for Chairs Due to Fall Hazard

January 12, 2016

A hanging chair from Pier 1 Imports is now subject to a recall due to concerns over stability.

The home furnishings retailer is recalling about 260,000 Swingasan chairs and stands. The suspension hardware on the chair and stand can break, or the stand can become unstable during use. Both of these conditions pose a fall hazard to the user.

Pier 1 Imports has received 101 reports of incidents with the chairs and stands. This includes 93 reports of the chair with stand becoming unstable during use and tipping over, resulting in 23 injuries. There have been eight reports of the suspension hardware failing, including four reports of injuries.

The chairs and stands were sold separately. The chair hangs from a steel stand and is made of a wrought iron frame covered with woven plastic wicker. It was sold in various colors and designs. The stands are made of steel and were sold in four colors. For a list of model names and measurements, see the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) release.

Consumers could purchase these items at Pier 1 stores nationwide and online from January 2010 through August 2015 for between $200 and $400.

Owners should immediately stop using the chairs and stands and contact the company for a free repair kit or return the chair and stand to a Pier 1 Imports store for a full refund.
