Possible Choking Hazard Prompts Recall of Zak Designs Water Bottles

September 17, 2015

A children's culinary accessory company is recalling a line of products due to a potential choking threat.

Zak Designs is issuing the recall for its 26-ounce plastic water bottles. Reports indicate that the inner plastic straw in the flip-top portion of the twist-off cap can break, posing a choking hazard. The company is recalling about 178,000 water bottles.

The 10-inch-tall water bottles have a flip-top spout on a twist-off cap with colored inner plastic straws in clear, blue, gray, green, light purple or red. The water bottles have popular characters on the front and come including Captain America, a Batman design, Minions, My Little Pony, Spiderman, Star Wars aircraft, a Superman logo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thor and Wonder Woman. Mold number "14158" and "Zak Designs" are embossed on the bottom of the bottles in the recall.

Bottles with a black inner straw and black twist-off cap are not included in the recall.

The water bottles were sold exclusively at Target stores in a "Back-to-College" promotion from June 2015 through July 2015 for about $10.

Zak Designs has received nine consumer reports of the plastic straw breaking during use. No injuries have been reported.

Customers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and contact the company for instructions on receiving a free replacement cap with straw.
