The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into certain model year 2012-2013 Ford Focus Electric vehicles.

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 12 complaints alleging incidents of sudden engine stall while driving the affected vehicles.

Eleven consumer complaints alleged vehicle shutdown while driving. Fifty percent of the reported incidents occurred at speeds of 30 miles per hour or more. The complaints show an apparent increasing trend. None of the complaints alleged that the incident resulted in a crash or injury.

A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.

Upon the conclusion of this initial investigation, ODI will determine what, if any, additional steps need to be taken. This could include further investigation, or a potential recall of all affected Ford Focus vehicles.
