Samsung is recalling roughly 2.8 million top-load washing machines because they pose a risk of injury due to impact. The top can detach from the machine chassis while in use, posing a risk of injury to users nearby.

The affected machines have mid- or rear-controls, and both model numbers and serial information is located on two labels located on the back of the machine. Thirty-four models have been recalled.

The washers were sold at Best Buy, The Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, and other home appliance retailers across the country from March 2011 until November 2016 for between $450 and $1,500.

To date, Samsung has received 733 reports of washing machines vibrating excessively or the top detaching from the machine chassis. It has received nine reports of injuries related to the problem, including a broken jaw, an injured shoulder, and other impact- or fall-related injuries.

Consumers are urged to immediately contact Samsung to obtain one of the following remedy options of their choice: a free in-home repair including reinforcement of the top of the machine and a free one-year extension of the manufacturer's warranty; a rebate to be applied toward the purchase of a new washing machine of any brand as well as free installation of the new machine and removal of the old one; or a full refund for anyone who bought their washer within the past 30 days of the announcement of the recall.

All consumers known to have purchased one of the affected machines will also be mailed a Home Label Kit including a control panel guide as well as more safety instructions. Until they have received and installed this Kit, consumers are urged to use only the delicate or waterproof cycles whenever they wash bedding, water-resistant, and bulky items. The lower spin speed in these cycles reduces the risk of the top unexpectedly detaching from the machine chassis.
