Scam Alert! Scammers Claim to Have Kidnapped Children, Demand Ransom
In the latest scam circulating North Carolina, scammers claim to be holding children for ransom.
In a startling phone call to parents, scammers claim to have kidnapped their child and provide personal information to scare parents into paying the ransom before checking to see if their child is actually missing.
A partner pretending to be the kidnapped child pleads for help in the background. The scammers threaten to harm the phony child if a ransom isn't paid immediately.
According to the North Carolina Attorney General's Office, North Carolinians in the Triad have been targeted and parents who have grown children are also receiving these calls.
If you receive such a call, hang up and call, text or email your loved one to confirm that they are safe. Afterward report the attempted scam to the North Carolina Attorney General's Office.
