Shock Hazard Prompts Segway to Reannounce Recall of Chargers for Personal Transporters
A wire inside the charger may detach and touch the charger's side
Segway is recalling 24 personal transporter chargers due to a shock hazard. These chargers are in addition to the 17 recalled in September 2015.
A wire inside the charger may detach and touch the charger's side. This poses a risk of electrical shock.
The affected products include Segway PT Off-Board Chargers manufactured from January 2015 until October 2016. The chargers, which have part number 23288-00001, are black and shaped like a box. They measure eight inches wide, four inches high, and 13.75 inches deep. Two wires connecting the unit to Segway PT batteries extend from one end of the charger, and the word Segway can be found above these wires.
The recall includes chargers with the following serial numbers: 15201C000362, 15201C000364, 15201C000366, 15208C000404, 15208C000406, 15222C000460, 15225C000486, 15225C000489, 15225C000494, 15242C000546, 16210C000621, 16210C000629, 16210C000630, 16210C000631, 16210C000632, 16210C000635, 16210C000636, 16214C000638, 16214C000639, 16214C000641, 16214C000642, 16214C000643, 16214C000645, and 16214C000646.
The serial and part numbers are located on a silver data plate located on the bottom of the charger. The chargers were sold only at authorized Segway dealers and distributors, as well as from Segway directly, from January 2015 until April 2017 for $920.
Although there have been no injuries or incidents reported in connection with this recall, consumers are urged to stop using the affected chargers immediately. They should unplug them and contact the company or the dealer—whichever sold the charger to them—for a free replacement power cord including a ground fault circuit interrupter.
The company is directly contacting consumers who purchased the chargers.
