Steelcase Swivel Chairs Recalled Due to Potential Fall Hazard

January 14, 2016

A fall hazard is making some chairs from Steelcase Inc. unsafe for consumers.

The importer is issuing a recall for about 17,000 Rocky model swivel chairs due to reports indicating that the screws connecting the seat and back to the base of the chair can detach. Steelcase has received 311 incident reports, including one report of an injury.

The recall involves 12 models of Rocky style chairs. The molded polypropylene chairs were sold in black and white and may have an upholstered seat and back. The chairs have a foldable seat, molded-in arms and either a four-star or five-star wheel base. Model numbers can be found on the underside of the seat.

For a list of the model number and styles of the recalled chairs, see the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) release.

Consumers could purchase these items at Steelcase independently owned dealers nationwide from August 2005 to June 2015 for between $500 and $1,550.

Owners should immediately stop using the recalled chairs and contact Steelcase to arrange for a free repair.
