Steering, Weight Rating Issues Prompt RV Recalls from Newmar, Keystone
Newmar believes that about 90 motorhomes are impacted, while Keystone is recalling about 20 trailers
A pair of RV manufacturers have issued recalls for vehicles with safety defects.
First, Newmar is recalling about 90 model year 2014-2015 Essex, and 2015 Mountain Aire and London Aire motorhomes. These vehicles are built on Freightliner rear engine chassis. In these motorhomes, the power steering fluid temperature may exceed the power steering hose material rating, subsequently causing the hoses to fail.
This condition could lead to a sudden loss of power steering, resulting in steering difficulty at low speeds and increasing the risk of a crash.
Next, Keystone RV is recalling about 20 model year 2016-2017 Passport recreational trailers, model 3350BHWE. These trailers were built with axles that have a 3500-pound capacity instead of the intended 4400-pound capacity axles.
If the vehicle is loaded to the specifications listed, the axle may be overloaded and fail, increasing the risk of a crash.
The manufacturers will notify owners and dealers will make the necessary repairs free of charge. The Newmar recall is expected to begin on July 3, 2016, while the Keystone recall began on May 13, 2016.
