Defective rear impact guards are the culprit in a recall announced by Strick Trailers.

The trailer manufacturer is recalling certain model year 1998-2005, 2007, 2009, and 2015 Dry Freight Van Trailers equipped with rear impact guards that use gussets with part numbers 46829, 46830, 59653, or 59654. The rear impact guards may not be strong enough to prevent a vehicle from traveling under a trailer in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 223, "Rear Impact Guards."

If the trailer is rear ended by an automobile, the guard may fail to prevent the automobile from traveling under the trailer, increasing the risk of injury to the driver of the automobile.

Strick is including about 2,400 trailers in this recall.

Strick will notify owners, and service centers will install reinforcements to the rear impact guards, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2016.
