Takata Airbag Inflator Recalls Continue with Saturn, Saab Vehicles

February 17, 2016

Saturns and Saabs are no longer on the American market, but that doesn't make them immune to the long reach of the Takata recalls.

General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2003-2011 Saab 9-3, 2010-2011 Saab 9-5, and 2008-2009 Saturn Astra vehicles due to defective Takata airbag inflators. Upon deployment of the driver's front airbag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants.

Rupturing Takata airbags are responsible for at least 10 deaths and about 100 injuries.

The manufacturer is including about 180,000 vehicles in this recall.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal airbag inflator in affected vehicles, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners with questions about this recall can contact Saab customer service at (800) 955-9007 and Saturn customer service at (800) 553-6000.
