Tech Support Scammers Reach Settlement with FTC, State of Florida
A group of defendants has reached an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the State of Florida to settle complaints that they defrauded thousands of consumers out of millions of dollars.
The group used high-pressure sales tactics to convince victims that their computers required tech support products. Many of the defendants will be banned from the tech support business. A $37 million judgement has been lowered to $236,000 plus the surrendering of assets due to their inability to pay.
The 2014 complaint against Florida-based tech support schemes, alleges that the defendants used software designed to trick consumers into thinking there were problems with their computers, and then directed them to telemarketers who subjected those consumers to high-pressure deceptive sales pitches for tech support products and services.
The FTC and State of Florida charged that the defendants violated the Telemarketing Sales Rule and the FTC Act, along with the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
