A total of 13 automakers are recalling an additional 652,000 vehicles that are equipped with certain Takata air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants—potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

To date, sixteen people have died and more than 180 have been injured due to the defective Takata air bag inflators. In total, this is the largest auto recall in U.S. history, affecting 69 million air bag inflators and 42 million vehicles.
