Toyota Extends Warranty Coverage for Sienna Minivans
Toyota Motor Corporation will extend warranty coverage on many 2004 and 2006 model year Sienna minivans because of problems with the rear liftgate.
Toyota reports 34 complaints about problems opening the liftgate or keeping the gate in the open position. There are also reports of 14 minor injuries involving the liftgate.
The warranty for the liftgate will be extended from three years or 36,000 miles to six years with no mileage limitation.
The warranty extension involves 585,000 Siennas with both manual and power liftgates.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the liftgate problem in August 2006. NHTSA reported receiving eight complaints about the Sienna liftgate with four reports of injuries involving the liftgate unexpectedly closing on someone.
Toyota issued a technical service bulletin in March 2004 to owners of the 2004 Sienna saying that the liftgate struts had been redesigned to help prevent seal damage and gas leakage.
Owners will receive a letter from Toyota informing them of the warranty upgrades.
