Toyota Recalling Nearly 228,000 Tacoma Trucks That May Leak Oil

If the vehicle is operated with an insufficient amount of oil in the rear differential, the differential may seize

May 4, 2017

Toyota has issued a safety recall for nearly 228,000 model year 2016-2017 Tacoma trucks.

On the affected vehicles, oil may leak from the area where the rear differential carrier is connected to the rear axle housing.

If the vehicle is operated with an insufficient amount of oil in the rear differential, the differential may seize and cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota will notify owners of the recalled Tacoma trucks beginning on June 12, 2017. Local Toyota dealers will then inspect the rear differential for oil leakage and either tighten the fastening nuts and replace the rear differential carrier gasket—or replace the rear differential carrier assembly if the components are damaged. These repairs will be performed free of charge to vehicle owners.

Owners with further questions or concerns about the recall can contact Toyota customer service at (800) 331-4331. Toyota's reference number for this recall is H0G.
