Transmission May Unexpectedly Shift to Neutral, Prompts Recall

Transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps, causing the transmission to potentially shift

August 5, 2016

ZF North America (ZF) is recalling 505,000 transmission control sensor clusters due to a powertrain problem.

These transmission sensor clusters, used in nine-speed automatic transmissions, may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

The company will notify the vehicle manufacturers that purchased the affected transmissions. Those manufacturers will file recalls, and their dealers will update the transmission software free of charge to prevent the transmission from shifting into neutral due to a faulty crimp.

The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.
