Unexpected Downshifting Prompts Recall of Ford Vehicles
An unexpected downshift may cause the rear tires to slide or lock, increasing the risk of a crash
The Ford Motor Company has announced a recall for vehicles with a malfunctioning transmission.
The automaker is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Ford F-150 trucks, 2012 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles, and 2012 Ford Mustang vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with an automatic transmission that may unexpectedly downshift to first gear, regardless of vehicle speed.
An unexpected downshift into first gear can cause the vehicle to slow down suddenly without warning. This may cause the rear tires to slide or lock, increasing the risk of a crash.
About 184,000 vehicles are affected by this issue.
Ford will notify owners of the recalled vehicles, and dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module with updated software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on May 23, 2016.
