Unexpected Shutdowns in Medical Ventilators Lead to Recall
December 9, 2015

A medical ventilator is being recalled due to a defective power board.

eVent Medical is recalling all models of its LS, 5i and 7i Inspiration ventilators. These pieces of equipment are used in hospitals and health care facilities to provide constant breathing support for patients. However, a faulty switch on the ventilators' power board may fail, causing the ventilator to shut down without sounding an alarm. If the ventilator shuts down, the patient may not receive enough oxygen and could suffer serious adverse health consequences, including injury or death.

About 250 ventilators are subject to the recall. The effected items were distributed nationwide from February 13, 2013 to December 31, 2014.

The company has received one report of incident, but no injuries have been recorded.

The firm sent an urgent field safety notice to all customers on October 13, 2015 informing them of this issue. The letter advised customers to immediately discontinue use of the affected ventilators until corrective actions could be taken.

Customers with questions about the recall can contact eVent customer service at (949) 900-1917.
